Once Upon a Time in Shelton... Once the premier industrial city on the Housatonic River, the face of Shelton has evolved greatly since its early days. As companies closed or moved away, riverfront properties fell into neglect and disuse. A devastating fire in 1975 rang the final death knell of the major remaining industry in downtown Shelton. |

Years of neglect and severe contamination, presented a major challenge in reclaiming our riverfront. With Connecticut Economic Development grants, federal Brownfields funds and money from a City referendum, work was begun to clean up the riverfront. In addition, other efforts throughout the city resulted in private development of available land and the renovation of existing properties. |

With city, state, federal and private investment, the City has enjoyed a major revival over the past 25 years. The riverfront was cleaned up and reclaimed while additional phases were planned. Private investment throughout the city rehabilitated existing properties and developed new construction. |
